Having travelled quite a lot as a student and while working part-time, I know first-hand that you don’t need to have loads of money to see the world. I’ve learned how to make my money go further, find affordable ways to travel and still enjoy amazing experiences along the way. So, I’m sharing some of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up to help you travel more, spend less and make the most of every adventure!
1. Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates
One of the easiest ways to save money is to be flexible about when you travel.
Flights and accommodation can vary significantly in price depending on the season, day of the week and even time of day. Travelling outside peak holiday periods, such as school holidays and major celebrations, can often save you a considerable amount.
K’s tip: If possible, compare different departure dates and consider flying midweek rather than at weekends. Even changing your trip by a day or two could make a difference!
2. Book Flights at the Right Price
Flights are often one of the biggest holiday expenses, so finding a good deal can make a huge difference to your overall budget.
Use flight comparison websites such as Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kayak to compare airlines and routes. Set up price alerts so you can keep track of fares and spot potential deals.
K’s tips – remember to:
- Compare prices across different airlines
- Check nearby airports for cheaper departures
- Consider connecting flights if the savings are worthwhile
- Check baggage fees before booking
- Compare the total cost rather than just the advertised ticket price
3. Travel During the Off-Season
If you’re not tied to specific dates, travelling during the shoulder season or off-season can be a fantastic way to save. Not only can flights and hotels be cheaper, but popular tourist attractions are often quieter too.
Visiting popular European destinations in spring or autumn can offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds and better-value accommodation compared with the height of summer.
4. Choose Budget-Friendly Accommodation
You don’t need a five-star hotel to have an amazing holiday.
Consider alternatives such as:
- Hostels and private hostel rooms
- Guesthouses and budget hotels
- Self-catering apartments
- Holiday rentals
- Campsites and glamping sites
Websites such as Booking.com and Hostelworld can help you compare accommodation options.
If you’re travelling with friends or family, renting an apartment and splitting the cost can sometimes work out cheaper than booking several hotel rooms.
K’s tip: Always check the location and reviews before booking. A cheaper hotel far outside the city could end up costing you more in transport.
5. Eat Like a Local
We all love to have a break off from cooking while on holiday, but eating out for every meal can quickly become expensive.
Instead of relying on tourist restaurants, explore local cafés, markets, bakeries and street food stalls. These often offer delicious, authentic food at much better prices.
K’s tips:
- Shopping at local supermarkets (this is usually an experience in itself!)
- Preparing your own breakfast
- Packing snacks for day trips
- Choosing accommodation with kitchen facilities
6. Make the Most of Free Activities
Some of the best travel experiences don’t cost anything at all.
Many destinations offer plenty of free things to see and do, including:
- Walking tours
- Public beaches
- Parks and gardens
- Museums with free-entry days
- Hiking trails
- Historic landmarks
- Local festivals and events
K’s tip: Before travelling, research free activities at your destination. You might be surprised by how much you can experience without spending a penny.
7. Use Public Transport
Taxis and private transfers can quickly eat into your holiday budget.
Where possible, use local buses, trains, trams and metro systems instead. They’re usually much cheaper and can give you a better feel for everyday life in your destination.
Some cities also offer travel passes that allow unlimited journeys over a set period.
K’s tip: Research transport passes before arriving and compare their cost with individual tickets to see which offers the best value. Sometimes travelling in a group it can be cheaper to use taxis instead of public transport, so it’s best to weigh up your options.
8. Avoid Unnecessary Foreign Exchange Fees
Currency exchange charges and international card fees can add up without you realising. Before travelling, check what fees your bank charges for overseas spending and cash withdrawals.
Consider using a travel-friendly debit card with competitive exchange rates and low foreign transaction fees – such as Monzo or Revolut.
K’s tip: When paying by card abroad, ALWAYS choose to pay in the LOCAL CURRENCY rather than your home currency where possible.
9. Pack Light and Avoid Extra Baggage Fees
Baggage fees can turn a cheap flight into an expensive one.
If you’re travelling for a short break, consider taking hand luggage only.
K’s packing tips:
- Choose versatile clothing that can be re-worn
- Roll clothes to save space
- Use compression packing cubes
- Pack travel-sized toiletries or buy toiletries when you land
- Wear your bulkiest clothing on the plane – boots and coats are NOT going in the luggage
- Check your airline’s baggage dimensions and weight limits
10. Plan Your Spending Before You Go
Setting a realistic travel budget is one of the best ways to avoid overspending.
Before your trip, estimate how much you’ll need for:
- Flights and transport
- Accommodation
- Food and drinks
- Activities and excursions
- Shopping
- Emergency expenses
Break your budget down into a daily spending allowance and try to stick to it. It’s also sensible to keep a little extra money aside for unexpected costs.
Final Thoughts: Travel More Without Breaking the Bank
